The Review

The Black Brimmer American Bar & Grill Review

On the biggest bar night of the year, the night before Thanksgiving, it might be a good idea to get to the bar early in order to avoid the cover charge and the crowds. Avoiding the half hour wait in the freezing cold, check. Avoiding the coverage charge for that crappy band, not so much. Apparently, the Brimmer management is also aware that it is the biggest bar night of the year and decided to start a cover charge before nine, weak, but touché. A good start to the night is the discovery of a coat check, this is very crucial. Coats left unattended are frequently stolen at bars and the chances of me remembering where I left my coat at the end of the night are slim to none.
The next order of business is the most important bar none, drinks and their prices. A beer will set you back $3.75, which isn’t bad considering the occasion. A mixed drink is the way to go though; a rum and coke or a gin and tonic is only a $1.25 more with twice the alcohol percentage. The bar service is average, it’s tough to get a drink at any bar when it’s really crowded. The food from what I sampled was well above average. The nacho platter was well worth the affordable price of $6, considering it was big enough for a meal for three adults. The seated sections of the bar had waitresses who were prompt, friendly, and cute which is always a plus.
The band, which was not worth a $5 cover charge to see, started playing way too early and were too loud in comparison to the number of people in the bar at the time. Having a conversation required yelling and lip reading, as well as an occasional hand gesture. The band, who is jamming out hard at this point, made it somewhat awkward to get a drink because in order to do so, you had to walk across the huge dance floor in front of the stage which was completely empty seeing as though there was no more than thirty people in the entire bar. The downstairs had another dance floor and a DJ. The music selection was good, but not great and the massive amount of people made it difficult to get to and from the bar. The bathrooms were also located downstairs. The men’s room never had a line for more than ten seconds and the women’s room, well you can imagine. On the busiest night of the year I give the Black Brimmer a B+ for their good atmosphere, decently priced drinks, and good service.

TMI Response: Is the Internet Colorblind?

Anonymity and the internet has been an ongoing topic from the very beginning. The beauty and unbecomingness of anonymity on the internet is a double edged sword that the internet community is just going to have to live with. One of the reasons why the internet and PC games like second life specifically have become so popular is because this medium gives people the ability to create a new identity. One they can shape and control right from their couch at home with little effort. On the other hand sites such as Facebook have gained popularity because they require a concrete and precise identity, which in turn holds users accountable for their comments and postings. Overall the internet provides a space for discussion, conversion, and deliberation where the biases of race, gender, cultural background, age, and ethnicity can be excluded. Where else in the world can that be done?

Stephen King's "On Writing"

Stephen King's, "On Writing", is a fun and quick read full of humor and wit.  The honesty and sincerity King writes with is refreshing and shows how much he cares about the subject.  There are many how to books, but there are none quite like this.  King's interesting and humor filled take on grammar entertains the reader, while feeding them a wealth of knowledge and helpful tips.

King describes the basic rules of grammar and lays the ground work for good solid writing.  His wisdom and insights are truly helpful no matter what level of writing you are at.  The sincere and friendly tone of "On Writing" clearly are instrumental to not discouraging inexperienced writers, such as myself.  Before I read the book my perceived judgment was of Stephen King ripping other writers' bad habits and writing flaws apart and talking in frustration about the simple never correctly used rules of grammar, but this simply is not the case.  I enjoyed reading King's "On Writing" and would recommend it to any student planning on attending college.

Late Night Adventure

Some people swore the house was haunted. It was all just a bunch of ghost stories to me. I’ve never a believer of ghosts and spirits. It wasn’t that I was an atheist per se, I just needed factual evidence. I was given more than enough proof one late September night, a night I won’t soon forget.
It was cold, damp, dark, and dreary. The pounding of my feet on the pavement echoed through the city streets. As I quickened my pace I could hear my heartbeat rise until it became in sync with the up tempo music in my headphones and the pitter patter of my feet. Cool, I thought. Running at 2 a.m. never seemed strange to me. My Mom always said I was a night owl. As my mind went over the list of stuff I had to do the next day: do some laundry, register my car, finish that paper, go grocery shopping, I felt my senses heighten. My vision cleared to the point as though it was daylight. The faint smell of trash, pollution, and pavement blend that created the quintessential city stench began to separate and enhance, giving me the nose of a bloodhound. The hair on my arms and back of my neck stood up giving me a chill that ran down the entirety of my spine.
The cause of all this became unambiguous as I rounded the corner of 5th street. It was the Davidson house. Abandoned for as long as I can remember, it was the hangout spot for the delinquents of my neighborhood. Because of the partially collapsed roof, deteriorating walls, and unstable floors it was condemned around eight years ago. The front door, which usually had boards across it, was wide open, creepily opening and closing with the wind. Like a typical college student in a horror movie I was intrigued and hopped the four foot fence surrounding the property. Feeling macho and brave I trusted my instincts and senses feeling excited and alive more than scared. The porch steps creaked and splintered piercing the cold still night air. Well, no surprise entry I thought. The hole in the roof allowed the moonlight to shine in creating just enough light.
When I reached the end of the room I began to hear whispering coming from the other side of the door. I froze and crouched down, hiding in the shadow of a plastic covered couch. Loud shuffling of chairs reversed the feeling of excitement and fear. This was stupid, was all I could think. A wave of adrenaline shot through my veins cut through my fear like a hot knife through butter. I rose and stomped my way to the door further committing myself and announcing my intentions. I kicked open the door, fulfilling a lifelong dream and feeling like Jason Bourne all at the same time, revealing the ghosts of Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, and Patrick Swayze arguing over UNO. Nothing was ever the same again after that.

TMI

The Internet provides a multitude of information right at your finger tips, allowing us to search anything and everything.  Some may argue that this is not necessarily a good thing, but I disagree. I like being able to find out who was on the Patriots' roster in 1996 and what the world record is for eating a pizza.  Don't get me wrong there are plenty of things posted on the Internet that are vile and disgusting, but nobody is coercing you to look up these websites.  Those annoying friends on Facebook who update their status every hour can be removed or blocked.  Advertising is so invasive in today's society that we don't even realize we're being advertised to half the time.  The main problem with TMI is the distraction factor.  Facebook is just down right addicting!  The completion of homework can be delayed for hours with all the distractions on the Internet like ESPN and barstool sports.  Navigating the Internet is a choice that involves self control and common sense.  Self control means looking up that academic journal, not updating your fantasy league.  Common sense means if your not sure what the website entails, you probably shouldn't click on it.
